The Perfect Hotdog Made Simple

The secret to a perfect hotdog is to know your meat, and how best to cook it. Whether you’re in the chicken sausage camp or prefer a nice pork dog, the best hotdogs never truly rely on garnishes and fixings. So, grab your mustard, ketchup, hotdog buns and relish, and let’s dive in!

Microwave:

While incomparable to a nice hot grill or stovetop, microwaving hotdog is a quick solution to a decent dog. To microwave your sausage right, wrap the hot dog tightly in a dry paper towel, tucking the ends under the dog so they don’t open up. Microwave on a plate on 80 per cent power for 30 to 45 seconds or until heated through.

Grill and Broil:

One of easiest and best ways to achieve a crispy skin, grilling or broiling your hotdog is sure to make for a tasty treat. Preheat your grill to its hottest setting for at least 30 minutes. Just before tossing on the dogs, lower the heat to medium. Grill the dog for 3 to 4 minutes until charred, and flip and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes. Broiling is a good substitute for those without a grill. Using a broiler, place the sausages on a rack and broil for 3 to 4 minutes until charred, and then flip and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes.

Roasting

Simple, effective, and good for a crowd, roasting allows one the opportunity to cook multiple dogs at once. For the perfect roast dogs, preheat your oven to 177°C, and place the hot dogs on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper and roast for 10 to 20 minutes.

Open Flame:

There truly is no greater joy than making hotdogs by an open campfire. Much like cooking with a grill, this technique develops a crispy, charred skin on the exterior, with an interior that is both juicy, as well as cooked through with perfection. For best results, use long-handled tongs or skewers, and hold the sausages a few inches above the flames for 2 to 5 minutes.

Simmer:

While a similar technique to boiling, simmering involves less risk of overcooking or splitting the dogs. Heat enough water to cover the hotdogs in a saucepan over medium-high heat, and place your hot dogs and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes.
